Ikea Kallax etc

I have a couple of the 2x2 Kallax racks, they were perfectly solid when full of vinyl and did a great job of keeping the room tidy. The only downside was that I played less records, I've always had my collection in rows on the floor, leaning against the wall (using wood to ensure a flat contact surface). So when I'm looking for a particular record to play I flick through the rows and always notice something else I want to listen to as well. When I had them in racks and could only see the edge of the plastic covers they are in, I found myself thinking of the album I want to listen to, pulling that one out and not really seeing anything else around it, and having a terrible memory (very terrible memory), I ended up listening to less and less vinyl. Now they are back on the floor in rows and I'm once again flicking through them it's great fun finding things I forgot I had.

I appreciate that my record collection is a great deal smaller than some of the collections here, and rows doesn't suit everyone, but racks didn't work for me.

The right hand side row is funk, soul and jazz, next to it is film soundtracks, the small pile in the middle is TV soundtracks, and the 2 rows on the left are everything else.

It works for me as it's not a big collection, I can imagine a lot of members collections are of a size that necessitates shelving though.

You can get storage racks that look similar to ones in record shops.
I have space in my listening room where I could use some for my modest collection.

Good way of accessing your vinyl, if I had more floorspace I'd maybe go down that route myself.

That's funny, I find the exact opposite, the seam at the top of the sleeve makes the perfect flick grip, and no wear and tear to the cover.

being a collector once, all mine have always been in covers. Only com out if I will be selling them and usually not even then.Helps not just to keep cover clean but record too. They do take up a fair bit of room though making records a fair bit thicker

They certainly do add to the storage space needed, and I think another reason why shelving didn't work for me is the sleeve seam obscured the album spine, making it harder to see titles.
