    Default Daevid Allen; terminal cancer

Very sad. I am a big fan of Daevid Allen, from Soft Machine through Gong to his solo work and back to Gong. Last saw him in Exeter 3 or 4 years ago with the Gong line-up that included Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I was aware of the cancer before, article in a Prog mag, but had hoped it would not return - very sad to hear this announcement.

I have mixed feelings about Gong under Allen's leadership, prefering the Hillage period and the later Pierre Moerlen one but Angels Egg and some of Radio Gnome are wonderful, especially the live session Gong did for the BBC during the same time - available on Gong Live etc.

Thank you Daevid for setting Gong in motion.

I will pray for him, it won't hurt.

    Regards Neil

'Gong Live Etc' was a great LP im dtill looking for a mint 1st issue with Diecut sleeve. You might be interested in the 'Pre Modernist Wireless, The Peel Session' Great recordings from'71-'74.. This was available on double Vinyl {Turning Point Recs} aswell as CDee..

However for me the Very early period {Magic Bro, Camenbert, Continental Circus} is the clobber i like best.
