Similar to me Adrian, I turned 14 in Jan '72. My brother had got an old (even then) Philips reel to reel for Christmas, and we used to hang the microphone over the back of a dining chair in front of the telly speaker to record Top of the Pops.
The sound of our budgie chirping and the kitchen door creaking became an integral part of our less-than-pristine recordings of "Telegram Sam" and "California Man", and the absence of these sound artefacts on the shop-bought singles took some getting used to Happy days
