Watched the new live-action Cinderella this morning (I'm a sucker for Disney) and enjoyed it enormously. The short Frozen Fever was almost worth the price of admission in itself.

Tonight its Black Book (2006) originally titled Zwartboek directed by the acclaimed Paul Verhoeven who gave us the classic Robocop. Lots of x rated stuff in this. Set in Holland during WW2 during the Nazi occupation and revealing the work of collaborators and the resistance. Based on various true events and very enjoyable in a macabre way; especially the ending. Stars Carice van Houten, Sebastian Koch, Thom Hoffman, and Halina Reijn.

Verhoeven also gave us 'Starship Troopers' - that's a hell of a film. Is it a satire or isn't it?

Yes the proper Total Recall is one of his too. You should watch Starship Troopers it is excellent and it has Denise Richards at the height of her powers.

It attracted some controversy since it depicts something of a 'fascist' future where it is insects verses man for survival in the galaxy. The book was essentially the war with Japan set in space, the film does depart from the book in some ways, but many critics complained that if it was satire it was not obvious satire.

Essentially in the future human society you can only vote and have children if you undertake military service for 5 years. On the grounds that 'something given has no value.' Another good one is: 'Violence is the ultimate authority from which all other authority descends,'

Anyway worth a watch, pref with the surround sound whacked up a bit.

Dunno. It's an OK movie, but a bit silly!
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

It is borderline silly and that is the point. Is it deliberately silly enough to be satire or is it a political polemic that is unintentionally silly?

Back to my roots now with "The Killers" (1946) directed by Robert Siodmak, who made a few of Burt Lancaster's films. Also stars Ava Gardner, William Conrad(of Cannon fame later in life), Albert Dekker and Edmund O'Brien. Has been remade a couple of times but this is probably the definative version, although I like the Lee Marvin one too.
