    Default Goldring G99... Any good?

I'm sure someone here will be able to tell me if the above is a reasonable turntable. Im only asking as i recently saw a post on here where the poster had arranged to ship his G99 to Italy. This kind of surprised me tbh as i can't find a lot of information about this TT at all

Yes i know what it is as i have one sat in the loft & i used to listen to it as a kid when my father decided to have some sounds on the record deck

So what's with the G99? Is it worth anything, if so i might as well do something about it

Up there with the Garrards ,very nice certainly worth some TLC and mounting in a decent plinth with a decent 12" arm.

Wasn't there a great G99 plinth for sale here, or was it on Timestep, or Crossover Network? Anyways, the G99 in good fettle and with a good or restored bearing, is up in the 301/401 class. All the idler harmonics are out of phase due to the vertical drive, fine for mono and managable for stereo if the plinth and idler are right..

Cheers Dave, i can see you know much more about this TT than i do All i remember was it sounding pretty good, but i was younger then. Still it made an incredible impression compared to all the music centres out there

Yes - I believe it was the very same deck that went to Italy leaving the plinth for sale that inspired the original post.

The only possible weakness is the main bearing, which should be ok to be fair.

The tragedy is that Technical & general, who stocked lenco idlers and many other spares, has closed due to retirement i understand. the Lenco specialist sites may have alternative suppliers..

Yep, I do know these, having owned a G88 very early on for a short while and a number of GL75's over the years, which use the same drive system, albeit with a pressed steel chassis.

I tried to buy a Garrard 401 in the late '60s, to no avail. I used a Collaro 2020 rim-drive deck to 'tide me over'. I then tried to get hold of a Goldring G99, again to no luck, so I said "sod it" - bought a used (~10 hours) Thorens TD124/II and never looked back.

If you can get hold of a G99 in good condition, it will be the equal of any 301/401.

The G99 will be worth a bit of tender love and care agree with others about it performing at a similar level to 301/401 Be really nice on a slate plinth
