My lap top is a PC and I want to use my Apple TV as a music server linked to a stand alone DAC.
The thing I don't like about iTunes is unlike Zune you must have your personal and credit card info with there store for the album covers to show up.
I don't want an on going active account with apple.

It's ok, they won't steal your money.

You can put your own album art in anyway. Apple's itunes album art doesn't always work that well anyway.

    I use album art exchange.

dbPoweramp can amongst things rip to Apple Lossless, but it'll only run on PC.
If you set it up to do so it will rip securely too, so long as your CDs haven't suffered too much in the way of scratches and damage.

One other thing in dbPoweramp's favour is that it can also extract the extra bits from HDCD and output those in Apple Lossless too.
