I find it interesting that magazines when reviewing a USB based DAC will generally mostly talk about the difference it makes to the digital out to a CD player or even DVD player They will only briefly mention the sound quality from the computer. For instance the difference in sound from my DVD player and laptop is quite big and I think that some of the magazines need to fully take on board how many people are now using computer based audio as the main listening source.
I would be be more interested in reading a very user friendly article on how to get the best sound from your computer and our there any tricks you can use to improve its performance

I suspect it's simply resistance to change in many cases. A lot more people are knowledeable about computer audio so it tends to undermine their perceived authority. It's the owl-arse syndrome
