    Default a basshorn is born

    hi

after over two month of work, between project, woodwork and paintjob, my basshorns got finished yesterday. it was quit hard work to bring them home. Each cabinet is sand filled, and weight is over 130 kilogram. 4 men were needed to transport them. I wanted the length of the horn not to bee too big, to avoid time delay problems. It has 1,5m length. Calculated Fc is 75hz at half space, with equalizing i am getting 50, 60hz in the room. This is about what my objective was, since i use a sub below them. I utilize a 12" JBL 2206h pro woofer, and a RAS300 plate amp to drive them.
Was the effort worth it ? Absolutely. first listening impressions were very impressive. Extreme controlled and fast bass, and dispersion in the room is much better, than it was with the 15" direct radiator in bassreflex cab, as i used before. Now i am awaiting to finish the satellite. That should take more about one month.

Angelo, you mention 'satellite', for someone with limited experience of horns, could you elaborate a little?

    hi Rob

shure. I mean the 3way horn channels, covering above 150hz.

the horns made of MDF layers, glued together, as can be seen on my blog, and then turned on a big wood lathe. Finally, grounded , and painted with PU
Polyurethane, which gives a satin, raw surface.

    - the midbass : a round tractrix horn with 96cm outside diameter, covering from 150hz to 700hz, using a 8" high-efficiency , cone driver. SPL will be 109db/1wm.
-the midrange : a round constant directivity horn with 56cm diameter, covering from 700hz to 10khz , usind a 2" compression driver with 111db/wm
    - the trebel : a horn tweeter, covering above 10khz, with 110db/wm

    all passive crossover, first order.

the channels are full time aligned, that meens all drivers are vertically on axis, with each speaker and driver placed on the same distance to the listener. This way, all frequences arrive to the ear the same time, giving a more coherent , transparent sound.

Ahh I see, well they're obviously going to sound amazing (I've heard Pete's horns and there as something uncannily good about them) with all the work you've put into them - not only that, the visual appearance will be mind blowing, always a good combo! Nice work Angelo.

Even Cerwin Vega would be embarrassed by that figure!
