    Default Noob to SACD

    I'm wondering...

If I've a SACD transport, is there any criteria that the DAC (that it would be paired with) should meet?

Thinking of delving into SACD with the growing availability of music in the format... even though seemingly restricted to certain genres of music...

Sadly unless you have a later spec Sony and matching AV amplifier there is no way to get SACD into a separate digital section via co-ax or fibre optic to an out board DAC but only to the inside of the AV amplifier, via a firewire connection only. I think Pioneer also allowed this kind of data transfer via firewire if I remember right. Perhaps the big Esoterics and DCS allow SACD transfer....ummmm Yes DCS does allow that as does Esoteric, with their SCAD transports and DACS.

I am afraid anything else is a non starter, so you have to listen to SACD out of the analogue outputs be they RCA or XLR. Nothing wrong with that as that is how I do it and enjoy SACD. I have a Marantz SA7.

    Ah!... yeah but no but.

I think Malek might mean the DAC inside the player, maybe?

Definitely "no but" then. I've just read the first post properly!

Serves me right for trying to 'multitask'. My wife is right after all!

Thank you both for your input

My ideal would've been an SACD transport paired to a DAC which would've had additional digital inputs for receiving digital signals from a iPod digital transport/dock e.g. Wadia 171i etc

    So much for that idea...

You can do it but you need to look at Esoteric and DCS......big money, very BIG MONEY.

Now this is where the "measure of discipline" part comes in

Does it mean that if I connect a Sony BDP370 to a Caiman the coax/optical output won't be feeding SACD 192kHz / 24bit signals to the DAC? (I know that the Caiman only supports 96kHz signals anyway)

Stratmangler, you've just saved me £150!!! (where should I send the cheque?)

So what's the only way of topping up the 96kHz of the good old Caiman? PC with opt out? ...perhaps the new Touch?
