Out of interest, Mike, do you consider tube-rolling or component upgrading in equipment, also as a form of tonal manipulation?

    Hmmm... Yup, I guess so!

Not just the 'tone' though, stacks of other stuff too. Just the same as swapping and changing any part of a system. Or even the room.

I agree; that's why I think it's always important to consider the bigger picture with these things...

Nightmares with work for the last week so hardly been at home let alone AoS - however I am really not surprised this thread ended up the way it did... I had a bad feeling from "Matts" #1 introductory post, and sadly turned out to be right. Hey ho, that's life, I'll get me slippers.

    I applaud your instincts, Alex

It shows how dedicated you are that as soon as you're home, and near a comp, you come and say hello

Room correction is all the rage these days and with good reason. Unlike the other posters so far (I think)I use an Onkyo 875 av amp which has Audessey room eq built in. My findings show its room and kit dependent. My old speaker setup was a pair of Ruark Talisman II fronts with Ruark centre which never got on with my new house when I moved something was missing. Running Audessey helped match the tonality and improve the sound field. At least that was when the calibration was done properly as its far from simple getting an accurate picture of a room.

I then changed to those white things in my Avatar and found that bypass mode worked better when listening to stereo especially. I then re ran the room correction and once I followed direction to the letter from Neil I found little difference between the two with Audessey edging it. I concluded that my old Ruark setup was far more room sensitive.
