    Default Amplifiers any good..?

OK you lot, have you any experience with this guy and his amplifiers..?

His feedback as a seller is bloody good but £860 odd quid could be a bit of a risk. If you'd rather not post in public then please PM me.

Thanks in advance for any comments constructive or otherwise.

This would compliment my current power amp, it would not replace it.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall seeing these or very similar amps offered by a seller in eastern Europe.

Been intrigued myself but something doesn't feel right about him making money off a design he got for free and one that is often available as a kit.

I know not everyone has the knowledge to build the kit so he can charge a fee for his time and skills but I don't know what ratio of the fee is skill v cost.

Feedback is good, no reason to doubt the quality of his work.

Its a good price for something hand made, or assembled in the UK!

I've seen his listing and his builds seem high class. I've also considered buying from him.

However for a custom build and in view of the relative high costs I personally would visit him, have a demo and generally discuss things before committing to buying. Actually seeing, hearing and discussing things will give you a much better feel for things.

Shaun -- not at all related to your post: Nice camera in your avatar pic! Mamiya RZ or RB, is it? Still shooting film? Monochrome or colour?

Me: Avid B&W photographer here, hence spotting the camera immediately. All film, mostly 6x6 and 6x9, with a bit of 135 when travelling. Building up a darkroom again after 25 year absence. Wonderful creative hobby to balance the technical side of my life (career).

Curious to hear what you're into...

Well, the camera in the photo was a Mamiya RB67 in which I mainly used Fuji Acros 100 film that I developed in FX39 solution when it was available. I gave up film based photography back in 2016 when I bought my first ever full frame DSLR. I first dabbled with digital in 2003 but thought it more than a bit of a novelty. Not anymore in 2018. I now get the images I always wanted but sadly not of the artistic quality that silver halides give. Traditional photography gives a quality that I very much doubt digital will ever be able to mimic. Digital is bloody good but in a totally different way, in hi-fi and in imaging.

Would I ever go back to medium format film based photography..? Of course I bloody would..! Especially if I had the type of property that would sustain it.

Mmm... I was once bitten by the Chinese junk, sorry, amplifier technology. I lost over 400 notes in such a purchase and so am seriously wary of doing something like it again. In fact, let me say, having thought about all of your comments here, the good ones and the OK ones, I will not be risking money in the purchase of something so unknown especially when I currently own the finest valve amp I have ever heard which as I am sure you know was built in China like all of the IAG stuff. Thank you all for your comments as they helped a lot.

Interesting comments, Shaun. Not wishing to take this thread off-course, I will only say that I agree wholeheartedly that digital doesn't have the look of film. Over the past few years I have been able to get around some of the major time commitment needed for darkroom printing by using a hybrid process - shoot on film, scan into digital and print archivally from there. It retains most of the look of film, and the results can be excellent. Still, silver prints have a depth that really can't be replicated, and that last little bit of that elusive quality is something I haven't found yet with the hybrid process.

With that, back to your amplifiers...
