    Default Advice for a mate

A mate wants to upgrade his second system with a new amp and speakers. My suggestion would be something like a caiman - chromecast and a set of active monitors as he has a limited space.

    Can anyone make any recommendations?
Main system: Sony TTS8000; AT1010; Audio Technica Art1; The Lentek; Cambridge 851n, Yamaha NS1000.
    System 2 - SBT; Technics SH-X1000 DAC; Denon PMA-850

Budget would be a big help.

Not sure where I read It (pinkfishmedia maybe) but the latest Yamaha amps (A-S501 A-S701 etc) are supposed to be a big Improvement over the older models and good value for money (assuming he changes his mind over active speakers)

An issue he has just raised is that he will mainly be listening to vinyl.
He currently runs his vinyl, and other sources, through an ION obelisk amp that I got for him a few years ago and some old, very budget speakers.

As I think, I think a speaker replacement is priority number one.

New or secondhand? Standmount or floorstander? Budget?

Happy with used. Bookshelf, small footprint.

If that's the model I heard at Scalford years ago, then I'd agree. Nice open mids without being overly smooth or dull, like a lot of hifi speakers.

Size of room, size of amps?
Frankly I think you nailed it 1st post, actives are the way forward if you're not too audio-neurotic
