Default If you had to buy one classical album

I do enjoy some classical music but I don’t currently own anything classical so I’d like to initially buy one cd .
    WHICH SHOULD I BUY?
I have considered this one ; 50 greatest pieces of classical music
    By the London philharmonic orchestra

That's an almost impossible question to answer. It's like asking 'what food should I eat', there are thousands of options. There are so many types of what people call Classical Music. It isn't just orchestral music.

Oh my god! There's nothing wrong with the bidet is there?

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

As has been said above, too broad a subject for 100 CDs let alone 1...

Try BBC iplayer Radio for Radio 3, Classic FM, and even Spotify if you have it. There are plenty of play lists there too.

Googling 'classical music primers' brings up the usual pieces.

    Enjoy.

I started in a random manner having little understanding of what I was buying. My first purchase was of Barenboim playing a selection of Beethoven Piano Sonatas and Shostakovitch's 15th Symphony [Haitink], because they were the only classical LPs in the sale at the local shop. Over the years I have enjoyed exploring music for myself. It has taken me to places the reviewers and critics [and compilation makers] are unlikely to go. That said, the CD you mention is as good a place to start as any.
