    I'm brian.

Default Sme 3012 series 1 tonearm

bought this about 4 years ago, with great plans for it, but that is now not going to happen, so time to sell.

Ive had quite a bit of interest in it, in a different sale thread, with many wanting to see pictures.
Most of that is probably just wanting to see pics of something rare!!!!
Buts that’s ok. A lucky buyer may also be out there too.

So, I thought it merited a sale thread to itself.

It came with a Garrard 301, which I sold to a member here, Mickricky, about 18 months ago.
Many of you will have seen the condition of his 301 at The Wigwam show earlier this year. This 3012 is in that condition.

The pair of them spent their whole time in a wooden cabinet, with a lid. I bought it from the family of the original owner.

So, it’s the series 1 version, dating from the 1950’s

Whilst researching this, I came across an old thread which has some great info.
See the 3rd post, from AUDIO GRAIL. Very informative, and contains pictures as well as all you need to know. Well worth a look.

    https://hifiwigwam.com/forum/topic/7...t-to-look-for/

He lists all the things an original of these should have. Mine ticks all the boxes.

You will see these for sale with wrong parts, usually from a series 2.
Commonly, the thicker bed plate, taller bed nuts, and the grey protective can. (This can was black in series 2......again, See Agrail post) are not present in what is being offered.

Mine is all original and looks in fantastic condition.

    It is pretty much immaculate.

One very small blemish on the back edge of the base plate, behind the back right fixing point.
Barely noticeable but I’ve tried to capture it in a picture, but haven’t really managed to capture it.
    And that’s it.

The arm lift/lowering device works perfectly.

The original versions didn’t have the bias device, like the series 2 , for example.
Then later, an after market device was introduced.
I eventually got one on Ebay, including the instruction sheet.
    Ive included a picture

When the arm and turntable were removed from the cabinet, the family of the owner, just snipped the wires!!!!! So there is no arm cable.
Luckily the connection end of this cable was in the tonearm and was there when I got it. It is the “correct” slider type connection. Ive taken two pictures to show it in position and separate

I am selling as is, but if a buyer wanted it re terminated, I can take it over to Mike Powel in Bolton, who will do it for me.

My price is £2000. For that I will include a standard SME head-shell.

See my picture of headshells. You will see that I also have two of the rare heavier version, as well as one of the large SPU.
I will sell any of these latter 3, but will want a more in payment .

My price reflects that fact that it is untested. Given the way it was looked after and how it looks and feels, I’m pretty confident it will work.

Anyway , my price is low in terms of what these normally go for.

Here is a recent one from eBay
It sold on buy it now for £2200.
It has the “wrong” protective can and the “wrong “ sized bed nuts, as well as a damaged headshell.

Happy to send other pictures to anyone interested.

    Sale agreed...subject to completion etc.

The deal included the SPU type headshell ( back left in picture above ), so that is gone too.

    Thanks
