    Ah, now I see. That makes perfect sense.

    The max volume I use is about 60 - 65%

    I think the Quad has 21 volume steps, but if you're using only about 60% of its travel you will be effectively using about 13 steps. If you attenuate somewhere along the line (or reduce the gain, which amounts to the same thing for this purpose) so you use 100% of the volume control's travel, you will have all 21 steps available to you and get effectively smaller step sizes.
    I estimate that about 10dB less gain, or 10dB of attenuation, should put you in the right ballpark.

    Yep, 21 steps and, usually, 13 max.
