Geoff, I used to use a little 306 with them occaionally too. Its a remarkably capable little amplifier the 306 and the 606 is similar but much more of it which you would expect as the amp topography is very similar.

I ran a little Decware flea power EL84 valve amp (1.8watts) with my Tannoys for years, I loved it although the bass left a bit to be desired the mids and higher frequencies were to die for.

I did something similar with a Chinese 'Raphaelite' 6V6 amp (beautifully made little thing). Top end was gorgeous, but again the LF lacked grip. 4 watts was pushing it a bit.

I like Rotel amps. Many have been very good.

The little budget RA-820 is an old favourite. It sounds way, way better than any bargain basement amp should!

Oh hang on that's not strictly true, there is a valve in the middle.

I agree. Everybody should have one of these. If only as a back-up. For under £100, what they can do has to be heard. This amp will work well in just about ANY system and sound great doing so!!

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Newest: Yamaha AS2100 in black: limpid, lucid and luminescent.

Oldest: MF A1001 (aka 'the beast'): heavily modified by John Sampson of JS Audio (higher quality/spec output transistors, caps and custom wound transformers, amongst other changes) - more grunt than a Tamworth Saddleback hog on steroids.
