“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".
“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”
"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”
“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

I agree with Gary, you can use just one lead to either the left or right on the sub. I've done that in the past and that works fine. Leads tend to come in pairs though.
You can't use the pre out.

I'm nigel.
Remember......you should not be able to hear the sub....at all.
To little output is MUCH better than too much.
If its up too high, it will impress at first, but trust me, after a while you will notice the bass dragging the impact and speed of replay back.
Get a friend to sit in your hotseat and listen while you twiddle (ooh err missus etc), your back will thank you.

Yeah it makes sense, cheers. I knew that the NAD came with external jumpers connecting the pre-out to the main-in, whereby removing them cuts sound output to the speakers. That's why I was confused by the connection guide in the sub's manual — I didn't think it would work that way.

I'm Alex.
Is ther a filter on your amplifier's sub-out. If not, your main speakers will be running full range, so you will need to adjust the crossover point on your sub and match level so that the bass is not overwhelming the sound from your speakers

It's a starting point, you have to use your ears. Try setting the sub to 55hz and turn the sub volume till its intrusive, then back off the volume slowly till the sub disappears. The speakers may not output to 55hz tho so you may have to play with that setting.
As has been said before its time consuming but worth getting it right
