Default 12AU7 dead - what to buy

    Hi,

A 12AU7 valve has died on my valve amp and just wondering if I'm as well to replace all 6 at the same time or just drop in a new one. Amp is currently fitted with Primaluna ones which it came with from the factory.

I fancy trying a different make (don't we all lol)

Gold Lions get great reviews but they are £180 for a full set, might be good though.

    Thoughts?

Replacing the whole lot is overkill in my opinion, just replace the one and maybe get another as a spare.

Watford valves have a good selection, also HotRox based in Manchester.

I tend to think manufacturers will have tested various valves in their designs and chosen something well suited. Trying alternative valves (I won't use the term 'tube rolling' because it's not English) may be fun, but may often be a complete waste of time and money.

Of course there are costly, exotic valves available that a maker simply would not consider. Whether these are worth getting involved with..........well who knows?

I've now ordered a new tube plus a spare.

Claymore MKII plumbed in until they arrive. It'll do
