Sorry but for those of us that find it very awkward fathers day is just commercial blackmail

Infact my overwhelming feeling is that we should be ashamed of ourselves for allowing these forced fun days. Its a blackmail day to sell product...that in essence is all it is

I used to think that too but I was quite touched that my two teenaged daughters thought to go and do something to show their appreciation for me. For a long time I was the “Loser Dad” that all teenage girls al seem to think they have. Now they are coming out the otherside of that phase and it was nice for them to sit eitherside of the sofa to me and hand me the presents and cards. They even let me give them a kiss and a hug when saying thankyou.

Then just ignore the "commercial blackmail" and use it simply as a reason to get together as a family and be close to those you love. I certainly didn't entertain any "commercial blackmail". My dad comes round most Sundays for lunch; today just happened to be Father's Day.

There's enough doom and gloom in the world now as it is, and not enough folk these days spend quality time with their parents, mothers or fathers, so today was a chance to do that and spread the love. Far better that, than not seeing them at all.

Cheer up, Martin, and stop being such a grumpy git!

Exactly. Nice one, Paul. That's what it's all about!

Sometimes I get the feeling that the doom and gloom merchants are more intent on dragging everyone else down to their miserable level, than BEING HAPPY for others who clearly enjoy and have something to gain from days like this.

Some folk need to step out from underneath their grey cloud and learn to smile more!

Yes, sorry but I’m with Marco - you’re welcome to your grumpy attitude but don’t foist it on the rest of us.

My father died just under three years ago, and I’m certainly not ashamed that I would love for him to still be here so that I could be a sad victim of your Father’s Day “commercial blackmail” on his behalf.

I hung out with my dad all day! We grilled steaks and he made homemade chocolate ice cream! My daughter who lives at some distance sent me a heart felt text message, and even my son in law sent me a nice message. A very good day in all!

Perhaps we should treat our Fathers special every day? But that’s not the reality of it, so it’s nice to have a day set aside to remind us to let our fathers know that they are loved and appreciated. And to remember those fathers who have already passed.

Being a cheapskate I buy the cheapest lager I can find (in cans) all year round then on Fathers' Day I get some lovely expensive ale in BOTTLES from my daughters - and maybe some nice dark chocolate brazils too. Whoopee!
