Where does this idea come from that sandals are okay as long as you don't wear socks with them?

Sandals are NEVER OKAY. Nobody wants to see your stinking feet. Put some bloody shoes or trainers on or stay in the house. There are no excuses.

I remember the good old days when kids wearing sandals were ridiculed, beaten up, and then ridiculed some more. We have gone far too soft as a nation.

Not ok, but out on the street, *marginally* more acceptable. If you're at the beach, and they're worn without socks, then like flip-flops, they're fine. However, I personally don't wear either under any circumstances. If I'm at the beach during the summer, then it's strictly bare feet (with a T-shirt and shorts).

Incidentally, do you hold the same views about women wearing sandals?

we had lots of poor kids that wore woolies plastic sandals when i was young. was all their parents could afford tbh. sad but true. i had a pair too but they were for the beach only, and wouldnt be seen dead wearing them in street. now these plastic ones are apparently cool. i wear what i can get my feet into. mostly velcro stuff; not cool but its better than nowt.

When I was a kid, girls and boys too were obliged to wear 'regulation' brown sandals to school in summer, until about the age of ten.

What about suits? I was talking to a young chap the other day who thought they were the be all and end all as far as clothing goes. For me they are totally boring, especially the jackets. OK, I can see the elegance aspect in a well cut outfit on a good figure but that aside 'good' suits tend to be mostly plain and of a similar style and as I say, boring as hell. I used to have one for every day of the week when I was working back in the 80's but it was the only option really in an office back then. Thank God jeans and sandals are normally acceptable these days.

If ever there was an argument against sandals that photo is it. Borderline abuse making some poor child wear them.
