“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

MI6 apparently. Although I think they mean the SOE?

Not bloody likely. Creeping around at night in occupied France with a sten gun garrotting sentries? I've seen what happened to Virginia McKenna in that film.

I'd be in the rear with the gear. Quartermaster's stores like Crapgame in Kelly's Heroes. Somewhere you can organise a fiddle so you come out of it with a bit more than a demob suit. I'm guessing that's not one of the outcomes on the test though.

You could write your ticket if you were in intelligence. Loads of opportunities after the war, go and work for the Yanks in the CIA. Or the big corporations, they hired loads of ex-intelligence operatives. Bit too boring for me though. Like accountancy but with maps.

    It just says 'soldier'!

I might volunteer to be a sniper. I'm resourceful and like working alone, plus, I'm a qualified marksman.
