I don't think the monarch really 'rules' these days but I totally agree positions like 'head of the church' and 'head of state' ( I use these terms loosely but hopefully you know what I mean) should not be decided by bloodline. What's the point of the PM having regular meetings with the monarch who may well have a lower than average IQ or level of interest, colossal waste of time. What's going to happen when we get the first aetheist monarch.... Silly me, he/she will just go to church and pretend like I suspect a lot of royals do anyway.

The empty roads of North wales are probably a legacy of "The Mad Mullah of the Traffic Taliban", Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom. Remember him? He was mental for sure, properly MENTAL, with an exclamation mark at the end. He was the guy who got a fellow officer to shoot him with a taser to show how safe they are.

And I doubt that the parents of a 40 year old motorcyclist killed on the roads of North Wales will have been too impressed by Dick using pictures of their son's decapitated head being used at a road safety summit without consulting them first. In fact, the graphic nature of his death had until then been kept from them.

Honorary druid Richard also climbed the scaffolding outside the headquarters to break into his own office to highlight the poor security there.

He did retire about ten years ago, but his successors aren't necessarily any more normal. I for one will stay this side of the border whenever I feel a Barry Sheene ride coming on.

There was a poor man from Chorley
Whose cat tried his patience sorely
    Though happier than most
The cat spurned his scratching post
And did an impression of Paul Morley.

Indeed, and not good. I also take your point about mad 'Brainstorm'. However, the reality is, the vast majority of north Wales consists of hills and fields, where there are more sheep than people... And *that* is why the roads are mostly empty. Makes it a joy owning a performance car, which can handle being thrown around corners, as you often get the roads to yourself!

Wrexham's the biggest town there, by a country mile, and the rest is hillbilly land. South Wales, with Cardiff and Swansea, is a different kettle of fish. However, I like it that way, and to an extent living 'off grid', certainly in comparison with somewhere like London or Birmingham, which isn't my cup of tea at all. I abhor overcrowding and constant busyness.

Keep me as far away as possible from the ravages of the 'rat race'!!

I agree North Wales is a beautiful part of the world, and the roads are a petrol head's dream. But most of the really goods roads are strictly enforced, like Cat & Fiddle, Devil's Bridge and North Yorks moors, with unmarked cars and even helicopters, for god's sake!

An exception may be around Glencoe, probably because blanket roads policing there is not economically viable due to the remoteness. I haven't been there for a few years, so that may have changed too.

Something else I've noticed in recent years on some major routes (I'm thinking of A9 Perth to Inverness here) is the 40mph speed limit for HGV's. I don't see how the massive traffic queues behind these lorries, all desperately trying to overtake at the earliest opportunity can possibly promote road safety.

Sorry I seemed to have moved a long way off topic here, so I'll just add that HRH has a pretty nice gaff up that way.
