“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Yeah but you've got some fantastic bridges, Chewing the Fat on New Years Eve and a nice rock that Rob Roy jumped off. Shame your neighbours are such tossers (I know, I'm one of them).

Warmest spot in the country here usually.

Personally, I'd nuke it (after I moved out obviously ). It's a stinky, grubby, dump full of scumbags!

John Betjeman felt the same way about Slough, which is near identical to here and only down the road. Leicester is much the same, but further away.

Some places have no redeeming characteristics at all and just don't deserve to exist.

Sure, but there's not much fun in going fast in a straight line, so for me, "really good roads" aren't the main roads or dual-carriageways, but rather than back roads in the country... Far more fun haring down those at 60-70mph, throwing the car round corners, testing its sports tyres and suspension, than doing 100mph (to get any kind of thrill) on straight main roads, and losing your licence to boot!

I can get properly out in the sticks here, within no more than half and hour's drive , and at most times of the day have the roads pretty much to myself, whilst enjoying some truly fantastic scenery, so what's not to like?

Something else I've noticed in recent years on some major routes (I'm thinking of A9 Perth to Inverness here) is the 40mph speed limit for HGV's. I don't see how the massive traffic queues behind these lorries, all desperately trying to overtake at the earliest opportunity can possibly promote road safety.
It's utter bollocks, of course, and promotes completely the opposite!

Fortunately, in a car like mine, with pretty explosive acceleration (which is the whole point of why I own something like that), I can overtake trucks quickly enough before anyone really notices, as long as there's enough straight road ahead to safely achieve the manoeuvre, and I keep an eye out for unmarked police cars and speed cameras...

Staying stuck behind huge lines of crawling traffic is not something I'm prone to doing, unless there really is no other option!

Begs the question: Would you rather live in a shit-hole with a nice view, or live in a really nice house with a view of other shit-holes?

Britain is a beautiful place taken as a whole. It's just the bits with people in that suffer.

Lol - you mean the heavily populated bits? Yes, well I avoid those like the plague!

I've always hated queues and crowds, and incessant busyness. I like being relaxed and chilled out. I have to admit to detesting the drive down to Dover, whenever we go abroad in the car, once we leave the relative peace and serenity of the M54, and hit the M6 at Birmingham.

Honestly, it's like you've crossed the border into another world!!

And things get progressively worse the further south you go, until one experiences the 'utter joy' of the M25........... I honestly couldn't cope if I had to face that shit [permanent traffic chaos and being stressed out to buggery] everyday

Neither. A nice house with a decent enough view. Of course a great view would be better, but one can't have everything!

Yes you can overtake quickly and safely with a rapid car if you are the one directly behind the lorry. The problem comes when you have to pass several cars as well. It takes just one driver deciding to do the same just as you're tearing up past him to leave you with nowhere to go.

Picture it. He looks in his mirror. nothing there. Pulls out and in those couple of seconds there has suddenly materialised a fast car. As Sheldon would say, Two cars occupying the same space is a physical impossibility, which will soon be resolved by fiery vehicular death. I know, cos it's happened to me, and my bike being able to go from 0 to 60 in three and a bit seconds isn't much help. Food for thought.
