    Sorry, I wasn't clear there, the death bit didn't happen, it was just a "moment", which stayed with me for a while.

    Yes. I had the occasional 'moment' when I was riding quick bikes.

    Oh yes, I know. That's why I prepare myself for the worst and often sound my horn/put on my full beam, when overtaking, to warn other drivers I'm coming. At the end of the day, sometimes you have to take carefully calculated risks, if you want to get anywhere quickly, and not spend hours stuck in traffic.

    I simply don't have that sort of patience!

    And long may it continue to work for you. I think the most important "preparation" is to ensure you have somewhere to go if things turn to shit. Bikes are more able in this respect due to their ability to squeeze through smaller gaps. I know I'm stating the obvious, but I know only too well that when the "red mist" descends, common sense can go out of the window.

    I'm sounding like the fun police, but I'm really not. If you have a fast motor and never use its potential, then what's the point? Just want you to stay safe mate.

    Sure yeah, cheers. And I'd also extend that to you, whenever you're on the road

    I completely agree about having somewhere to go. I try to plan for that as much as possible, by continually monitoring gaps in the traffic, whilst I'm overtaking.

    I also usually always do it in short bursts, by overtaking no more than a few cars at a time, then slipping into a gap, slowly edging myself forward in the queue, and by applying the minimum amount of speed possible to get the job done, and rarely overtaking long lines of traffic at once, at very high speed.

    As you say, it's all about giving yourself as much chance as possible to survive if things should go tits up.

    Let's not forget too, that if in the first place some idiots didn't just sit behind trucks and other slow-moving vehicles, because they're too 'scared' or can't be bothered overtaking them, then some of these tailbacks wouldn't occur - or they'd be a damn sight shorter!!

    It never ceases to amaze me sometimes how inept and lacking in confidence some drivers are, and how they're just seemingly content to 'pootle along' in a little world of their own, oblivious to what's going on around them

    Motorway driving is a doddle, been doing it for donkeys years.

    Being originally from Leeds, I've done the long M1 run from London to Leeds and back too many times to mention.

    With one of my daughters now at Uni in Nottingham, we're regularly London to Nottingham and back these days.

    Keep your distance, watch your speed, use your mirrors before making any manouvre needless to say particularly before overtaking.

    And as my Dad always said since we were kids, 'read the road !' ie: anticipate and never assume the obvious

    I'd add to that lot, drive to the conditons of the road - Times I've seen 'nutters' hammering it along the fast lane in the wet
