    Default Static electricity

    Hi Group,

Sometimes I touch my sub-woofers, usually to change a setting, and get a nasty static electricity shock...
Sometimes, it's fine... more often than not I get no shock, in fact.
Yesterday I touched one of my Amps and got the same nasty shock...
I'm afraid these little shocks slightly damage the electronics...

What can be done to avoid static shocks ? Gloves ?
Of course, a remote is a good idea and usually avoids the problem

    Thanks, Roland, Bristol, UK

Try wearing no shoes and see if that helps, or provide an earth point that you can touch next to the kit so you can discharge through it before touching the amps.

Appreciated Jazid... I don't usually wear shoes, but you've given me ideas...
How do I provide an Earth point ?

IMO it is almost certainly you being charged up, and then the charge being discharged through your equipment's earth via the casings.

If so I think harm is unlikely. You may have an artificial carpet and a dry atmosphere which causes this, I used to get a hell of a belt from things in my council flat which was dry and hot, but now at the coast it never happens, the air being very humid.

The static charge is on you. Wear less nylon!

It won't harm the equipment at all, not unless you can charge yourself up to the point were the discharge is enough to kill you.

Alternatively, build up enough charge that you can run the system on static electricity. Saves on the leccy bill and eliminates the need for fancy mains cables.

At that point you might as well knock up a costume and become a super-hero. Stopping bank robbers and such like with massive blasts of static. Call yourself 'Nylon Man' or something like that.

Ah fetishes. Don't think I've got any. I'd like to try one though, see what all the fuss is about!
