    Default Turntable weight

I've never used a turntable weight before. I have a Garrard 401. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks.

Hmm...well, what I would beware of is adding extra load (weight) to the main bearing.

An old subject. Your not going to do any damage to the standard Garrard bearing. I've been using a solid copper 1.25kg weight on mine with NO degradation in sound what so ever. Indeed, there's even an argument for added additional mass on the platter for the supposed fly-wheel effect which was recommended by Shindo. In fact you'll fact several over sized platters for sale on the open market which added over an additional 0.5kg weight onto the bearing which can either be used with standard or modified 401 bearings.

Added weight towards the centre will do little for flywheel effect.

I don't personally like big hefty record weights. A simple, none too heavy puck will damp the record enough.

    .
Dosen't it have to be spread around the periphery of the platter?

Yes. Classic example is a vintage steam engine flywheel. The mass is concentrated to the outside.

It's advice on brands and models that I'm looking for more than anything. Cheers.

As above, a record weight will not* add to the rotational inertia of the platter as its mass is at the centre rather than the periphery.

    * To be absolutely accurate it will do something, but very little/negligible.

It's mass is more important than brand/material etc. All you want is something to ensure the record is making good contact with the platter. I have a cheap Chinese one which works really well. Cost me £16 off eBay.

Guys, I know about flywheels, mass, the job/purpose of the clamp (yes I called it a weight I know) etc etc. I just want some suggestions for makes and models please. Thanks!
