At the risk of getting my arse kicked for going slightly 'off topic', may I suggest looking at a video posted by stratmangler over on 'Musical Compositions'.

It's a good reminder of why we got into this hifi malarky.

Forget the myths for a few minutes, and just enjoy.
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in

T/T: Inspire Monarch, X200 tonearm, Ortofon Quintet Blue. Phono: Project Tube Box CD: Marantz CD6006 (UK Edition); Amp: Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated.
Speakers: Zu Omen Def, REL T9i subwoofer. Cables: Atlas Equator interconnects, Atlas Hyper 3.0 speaker cables

    T'other system:
Echo Dot, Amptastic Mini One,Arcam A75 integrated, Celestion 5's, BK XLS-200 DF

    A/V:
LG 55" OLED, Panasonic Blu Ray, Sony a/v amp, MA Radius speakers, REL Storm sub

Forget the past, it's gone. And don't worry about the future, it doesn't exist. There is only NOW.

In an earlier post I said that I don’t pay attention to measurements anymore, I buy stereo based on its ability to evoke emotion. It seems a lot of us are on the same page?

But what I didn’t say was that as my system has evolved to be emotionally evoking, I find that I’m using gear that has been touted as Hi End. Which usually means it has some quality that garners praise in the industry. So perhaps accuracy is what makes a system more involving? If a 13 foot grand piano sounds like a child’s toy, it’s not going to be satisfying.

As far as buying name brands to impress others, I don’t subscribe to that. Oh! I know people do! Well to do people want to show off the fact that they own the best! But personally, I don’t know a soul who is impressed by the names on my stereo, no one I know is even aware of who these companies are. While they may be impressed by its sheer size, and quality of playback, the fact that I have a Cary CD player doesn’t even register with them, they’ve never even heard of them. So I hang out with a bunch of hicks, so what. That’s why I’m on this forum, to have someone to talk to about this crap. And I’d hate to think I spent $20 grand to impress you blokes.

I want an emotive connection to the music I play, and most of what I like gives me that. My system isnt top end by any means but it hits the spot, and that, to me, is what I do it for.

In the right circumstance you can get an 'emotional connection' from a crappy car stereo, doing seventy with all the road noise and that.

I suppose it depends on what you define as an 'emotional response.' There are some tunes that make me nostalgic, does that count?

Personally I think the emotional connection is a given, or you wouldn't be listening to music at all. But there is also the physical and intellectual stimulus too. Isn't having a good system just about getting more of what is already good? The 12 ounce steak instead of the 6 ounce. That's how I see it anyway.

Maybe, but just being relatively content, Ive found, helps a lot. Chasing the dream can become tiring; well it was with me eventually. I know now what would improve what I have but also know I dont have to.
...and of course nostalgia is an emotion; and a good one, but we dont want that all the time. Beauty is better afaic

I've probably heard it, but without knowing what it was. I always get Yello mixed up with Yazoo anyway.

I like all sorts of music, really, apart from 'free' jazz, which just sounds like people playing notes at random. I need a semblance of a tune.

I think it also helps 'unlock' new types of music, so you're not just limited to enjoying one genre. I'm certainly finding I appreciate solo piano more now I can follow what the left hand as well as the right hand is doing.

I also need a system that will make a decent fist of a wide genre. I like Bill Evans Trio and I like Wu Tang Clan. I wouldn't have a set up that could do justice to one but not the other if I could help it.

Have you heard piano through Lowther horns? That's an odd experience.
