I remember a BBC programme many years ago in which an academic stated that there is a world of difference between an intellectual and an academic.

I have had about five encounters with academia in which the personnel have shown themselves to be actually lacking in intellect, and rather conceited and arrogant, these all during my attempts to study for a degree. They really do not like having their flawed reasoning or poor understanding exposed, which I found a surprise, my thinking that they would humbly grasp an opportunity to show devotion to the pursuit of truth.

IMO it is only a very few academics who have a humble self effacing authentic devotion to seeking truth, and beneath them are numerous mediocres, there for the role and its apparent social status and esteem.

It is generally recognised that one only needs an IQ of about 115 - 120 to get a 1st class honours degree, the rest is work.

Cathy Newman's saga with Jordan Peterson on C4 a few weeks ago illustrated how someone with a 1st class Honours degree from a very highly regarded university, Oxford, can actually exhibit very poor ability to be objective, or comprehend subtle abstract things in argument.

To me an intellectual is a person who seeks truth in all areas, spanning all disciplines to establish further truths, and it comprises intelligence and knowledge. An academic specialises in his area and becomes an expert in that; an expert knows more and more about less and less.
