    Default Good morning

    Hi guys,

I'm a newbie to the forum.

I was lucky enough in my youth to have a Marantz amplifier and CD player along with some Cyrus 780 speakers. The Marantz stuff gave up the ghost after about 10 years but the speakers remain, alongside some nice Mission floorstanders.

Over the past 10 years I've been consuming music through my computer and ipod. The sound quality is a real issue so I decided to embark on building a decent system. I like the idea of giving a new lease of life to vintage basics alongside some modern accessories, I don't know how it will pan out but my budget won't stretch to buying modern high end stuff.

I've purchased a Sansui AU-317 Amplifier as part of a job-lot which came with a Sansui TU-S5 and a Sansui SC-1110 Cassette Deck (I have an eclectic taste in music and some releases are coming out on cassette again!!).

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

    Welcome to AoS Chris,

I can understand your dissatisfaction with computer audio, but it doesn't automatically mean file based audio cannot sound good. I'm no expert here, but I believe the DAC used plays a critical part in achieving good performance. We have many Members here who are successfully pursuing this approach, who, I am sure, would be more than willing to help you with advice.

Sansui made some very good gear, though I'm surprised you are considering using cassette as a source medium - are they really releasing new material on cassette?

    Enjoy the Forum

Thanks for the messages guys. I wouldn't usually look to purchase a cassette deck but it came as part of a job-lot. I couldn't believe it either but some artists are releasing material on cassette again.

    Hello Chris. Welcome to AOS.

You're not the only one on a budget. It's amazing how good a system can be assembled on a shoestring if you buy wisely.

The Sansui gear you have is quite nice and the SC-1110 was a decent cassette deck if I recall. Vintage gear is popular here, so you'll be in good company.

Tell us what music you like and what further plans you have for your system if any. Feel free to join in and chat with everybody, we're all friendly .

    Enjoy the forum,
    Geoff.
