I have the original HD800, and quickly discovered that it needs a lot more current (Ampere) to get the bass moving. So when used on a less than ideal current source (i.e. lousy headphone amp) it's mainly the mids and tops that can then be reproduced. But once the HD800 gets the right kind of signal drive the bass is well and truly adorable, with head shaking low bass.

Might be well worth doing for the 600 series. This article, and a recommendation from CageyH here, prompted me to make up a new cable for my HD-424, and it greatly improved the sound.
