    Default Hi

    Hi everyone

    I've just joined the forum.

I've been collecting and listening to vinyl since I was around 3 years old, back in the early 1970's. It's been a long trip from a Chad Valley Close and Play plastic record player to a Gyrodec, with a detour in the 1990's for a CD binge, but it's been a blast.

I still have every vinyl record I ever purchased - except for the 3 albums I (regrettably) sold in 1986, but I replaced those with mint 1st pressings last year, so I'm complete again!

    Nice to meet you all!

    Welcome to AoS John.

Do you still play your Chad Valley discs on your Gyrodeck?

    Enjoy the Forum

    Hi Geoff

Thank you for the warm welcome!

It's probably easier to list the music I don't like
I mostly don't listen to: opera, chart pop from 1983 onwards, techno, rappers, or anything which is too self-indulgent

For example, over the last few days I’ve been enjoying Brian Eno's Here Come The Warm Jets (1st UK pressing on Island), Black Sabbath Vol 4 (1st UK pressing on Vertigo), Wire's Pink Flag (1st UK on Harvest) and Pink Floyd's Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1st UK mono on Columbia).

I generally prefer the sound of early UK vinyl pressings, or Japanese SHM-SACDs. Doesn’t always have to be old though

    My HiFi system currently comprises:

    Turntables:
Gyrodec Mk III with Rega RB300 (to be replaced by a Jelco SA-750D this week) with AT-440MLb and Denon DL-103D (I got Van Den Hul to retip and replace the cantilever) and Pro-Ject Tube Box DS tube pre-amp
    Rega Planar 3 (1980s era) with RB300, AT-440MLa and NAD PP-2 pre-amp

    Amplifier:
NAD T-741 (useful for its discrete 5.1 inputs)

    Speakers:
    5 x Ruark Swordsman (1980s vintage) in 5.1 configuration
    Ruark Log-Rhythm subwoofer

    Tape:
    Revox A77 reel to reel
    Pioneer CT-S550S cassette deck
    AIWA HD-S200 Portable DAT recorder

    SACD/Redbook CD/Blu-Ray/DVD/DVD-Audio:
    Oppo BDP-95E

    Minidisc:
    Sony MZ-RH1 Hi-MD portable recorder

    Solid state recorders:
Korg MR-2 hi resolution recorder (mostly record to DSD)

    Headphone amp:
Oppo HA-2 SE DAC and headphone amp (mostly use for native DSD playback)

    Cheers!
    John

    Hi Barry

Haha! The nursery rhyme records bundled with the player? I remember those! But only barely…

As a young kid, I actually tossed them aside immediately and raided my parents’ collection of singles instead!

I was particularly fond of Del Shannon’s Runaway, George Harrison’s My Sweet Lord, The Small Faces Sha La La La Lee (yeah!), Roy Orbison’s Oh Pretty Woman and a bunch of 1960s guitar instrumentals. I shudder to think what that Chad Valley deck did to those!

No idea what happened to the bundled Chad Valley records though.

    Cheers!
    John
