RAM 150 which includes an 8" ABR or for even more bass, the RAM 200 with a 10" ABR. Both are larger than the 15xr but both are vastly superior in every department. Another contender would be Goodmans Achromat Sigma although difficult to find now. They also sport a 10" ABR and have loads of bass although the cabinet finish may not be to everyone's tastes...Finally, B & W DM 14/1400 which are quite compact considering they use 2 x 8" units and provide more accurate bass than all of the aforementioned.

Your nice spks would make enough for most hifi folk (assuming properly fed). Cornering them will add weight but if more cone is needed it's a sub or bigger cabs .
My audible range 20hz to 10Khz Yours?

Completely agree - Q Acoustics range spring to mind but there are more contenders for very little cash
(none requiring cone repairs or crossover rejuvenation

Exactly my thoughts, QA2020i’s if RS have any left we’re only £79, I had a pair for several months and they impressed me so much I invested in the 3050 floor standers which are superb, the 3020s at £149 are excellent value too.

Can someone please explain how we got from wanting speakers with more bass than Celestion Ditton 15s to recommending Tannoy Mercury v1s and Q Acoustics 2020is??

Most of the modern bookshelf speakers like the QA2020i’s are very capable in the bass area, and surely quality is more important than quantity.
If you want more that’s what tone controls are for.

From my experience you can't match a pair of good sized woofers in a big box with a small modern bookshelf speaker however well designed it is. From the description of the OP I suspect his mate is after something that gives a sense of physical presence to the bass.

QA2020i do just that, more than amply ... I use a pair on stands as my main speakers, replacing an aged B&W pair I had since the 80s.

    Perhaps Q Acoustics use Voodoo
