“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

My particular diet is called the 'curry' diet, home made of course. I am 5'9" and weigh around 14 stone and have severe osteoarthritis in my left knee which sort of counts out walking, lifting and standing. My left leg is also two inches shorter than my right due to being completely stupid when riding motorbikes at the age of 18. I so need to lose weight for myself. I have a cunning plan for summer.

Yesh, and there's that swinging 'trunk' of yours to consider

I'm 15 now (44" chest, 36" waist, at 6ft 2ins), but would like to get down to 14 stone, and maintain it, which is achievable with my current exercise regime

Why the hell did you eat that cack everyday, though? It's notoriously bad for you. In a country like that, there must've been plenty of other choices of food! Where in the States were you?

I’m 6”2’ and around 13 ish stone. Not sure what my chest is but my waist is 32”. Before when I ate bread I was 34” waist and probably around 14 stone. A couple of years ago I started Karate and made an effort to get fit by doing interval workouts. Starting such a thing at 40 may seem like a bad idea but it has been one of the best things I have done. All through my 30s I had back problems and although I still have issues they are much less reduced and my mobility is much higher. I no longer walk bent over for a few minutes when I get out of my car after a long car journey.

Nah, Burgers, steak and lobster in America. And a short stack of pancakes for breakfast. The Kentucky thing was in this country. I started a new job, in Burslem, which is the town that time forgot. They still had early closing day on a Thursday in 2006!. And the only place to eat was KFC. My mother called me to ask how the new job was going, wanted to know what I was doing for lunch. I told her and she made me promise to stop.

I'm 63 - 65Kg (around 10 stone) and my height is 1.7m (5'7"), so my body mass index is more or less spot on; in the middle of the acceptable range

When I was younger I drank a lot of beer and I was easily 70Kg (11 stone). When I worked out how much I was spending on beer, I decided to cut it down. My reduction in weight was a fortuitous consequence of my reduction in expenditure!

These days, having been diagnosed with Type II diabetes, I'm very diet conscious. So as little sugar as possible, low salt, decreasing the amount of red meat, plenty of fish, plenty of fresh vegetables, and a lot of starchy, slow energy release carbohydrates: pasta, rice, bread and potatoes. It works for me, as my blood sugar level is the same as that of a non-diabetic.

    Good stuff, Paul!

One of the WORST things you can do for a bad back is to continually sit on your arse...
