Ah, the way you wrote that sentence (as you'll probably agree) it looks like the KFC thing happened in America.... KFC is notoriously one of the worst things you can eat, simply because of all the shit that goes into the 'special recipe' for the chicken marinade.

I knew someone who once worked at one of their establishments, and he said that the marinade used to rot his shoes whenever any of the mix spilled on the floor! Horrid stuff.

I have always been very skinny. I’m 1m 93cm tall, when I was 25 my weight was just 65 kg.

After that I decided that being THAT skinny is a shame. I started going to gym and paid for a year of personal training. The trainer made me eat A LOT of food. I was eating 6 times a day, mostly slow carbs (buckwheat, oats, brown rice), meat and fresh vegetables. I literally had to force myself to eat all that food. After 2 years of working out 3-4 times a week and eating like there’s no tomorrow my weight was 85 kg.

Then I fell down the stairs and severely injured my back. I couldn’t work out for several months and during that time my weight dropped to 70 kg.

Last year I noticed that while still being underweight, I started to develop a bit of a spare tire. I cut out bread and potatoes from my diet and statred to walk to work instead of taking a bus. The spare tire disappeared in about 2 months.

After 18 months of back problems (slipped disc) I decided at the start of the year I had to try and loose a few lbs and take up more exercise (not difficult as I was doing very little mainly in fear of doing more damage to my back) So since the start of the year ive lost almost a stone and I am now working out in the gym a couple of times a week along with some swimming as well.

I started with a plan of doing mainly exercises to strengthen my lower back such as dead lifts, leg presses, seated rows etc but over the weeks as I've felt more comfortable and stronger this has moved on to squats, dead squats, clean & press, shoulder press, bench press and other free weight routines. That combined with 20 mins of cardio and regular swimming means I'm feeling so much happier in myself and about myself.

The diet side of things has been harder but I'm now trying to eat sensible meals and cutting out late night snacks and (most of) my chocolate intake.

The exercise side of things has now got to the point where I enjoy and look forward to it as I can feel myself getting stronger and fitter. I really cant stress how important it is to be active and fit.

Well done Ben. Sounds like some dedication went into all that. Excercise and activity definitely do make you feel better.

    Cheers Geoff,

I'm 43 this year now and have always been stocky & big boned lol. In the past I've been generally active and up until about 4 years ago I was cycling 30 to 50 miles a week running and swimming in preparation for an Olympic triathlon. Then after a few months off which turned into a year I started to play golf again and I think that lead to the slipped disc (it was my own fault as I ignored the warning signs).

Anyway to be back active and feeling strong again is very satisfying. I guess I'm still technically obese in terms of my actual weight but I that will slowly change over the coming months. I'm never going to be a "racing snake" physique and I don't want that but If I can start to get a less rounded body shape with some upper definition il be happy.

I worked at KFC when I was a student and I can advise you that there is no 'marinade'.

The chicken arrives fresh not frozen and is then broken and covered in the coating which contains the 'secret recipe'. The coating is like a dust, it's not a liquid. It is just a blend of herbs and spices, mixed with flour and breadcrumbs. There is nothing in it that is bad for you. The only thing about it that is *potentially* bad for you is the deep frying. But a lot of food is deep fried so that isn't specific to KFC.

Your mate has a vivid imagination.

Well all I can say is things must have changed since you've worked there, because that's what he told me, and he's no liar. Or perhaps I got it wrong and it's the 'secret recipe' coating that rotted his shoes, when accidentally spilled on the floor, during a busy service? Salt can do that.

Also, in various studies (on TV, etc) into 'junk food', KFC has come out worst, mainly because of the truly horrendous level of salt that goes into the, erm, 'secret recipe' coating, which perhaps as a salt fiend, is why you like it?

Best in such tests was fish and chips, providing the chips were thick cut, and therefore didn't absorb as much fat as their thinner counterparts, and that the batter wasn't too thick on the fish.

Next best was Chinese takeaway food, although it depended on what dishes were ordered, and just ahead of KFC in the 'healthy stakes' was Indian takeaway food, as the heavy use of ghee, and sometimes cream, made it highly calorific. Pizzas also fared badly, due to the lashings of cheese applied to them by delivery restaurants, especially with deep pan and stuffed crust varieties.

When Del makes southern fried chicken at home, using fresh free-range chicken, to her own 'secret recipe', I can assure you it tastes nothing like KFC, and for all the right reasons!!

I once had the misfortune of sampling some KFC in the mid '70s. It was the most fatty, greasy, thing I have ever eaten. Never again!
