Definitely thinking outside the box there!

A mainly digital setup with a musical amplifier and endearing 1970's speakers. A CD player that hardly ever gets used and a turntable that is good enough to remind my how enjoyable my old vinyl is. Some cables and things.

You'd have to go for a sit down with HR Woman if you did that. Years of corporate enslavement has taught me that is absolutely the worst thing they can do to you. No-one cares about getting sacked but no-one wants to go for the sit down with HR Woman. It's the only thing that keeps everyone in line.

The last one I spoke to was very nice (quite tasty too). I'd announced that I was leaving and HR and management were trying their best to dissuade me.

Didn't make any difference, I still left. They shouldn't have announced an attractive early retirement option and allowed anybody to put in for it!

No those are fine. It's when you go for the 'You did something wrong' meeting. It's surreal, disturbing and desperately tedious all at the same time.

Never went to one of those. I was the white collar union rep and management gave me a wide berth. They didn't like my habit of registering official grievances at the drop of a hat.

That's the right tactic and one I use now. I wasn't so smart when I was younger. I was working for one firm where the general manager was clinically insane. I won't put up with any shit so I was 'in the office' a lot.

Eventually the company saw it my way and the general manager was sacked on the spot and escorted off the premises but it went on for about 18 months before that happened.

So "HR" is a real job then? I thought it was just one of those obscure job titles that "Crystal Maze" contestants usually had (apologies to any "marketing consultants" and "senior buyers" that might be reading).

I never said it was a real job.

First firm I worked for was back when it was still called 'Personnel' and it was just one lady who came in part-time.

Nowadays there are dozens of people in 'HR' departments. No idea what they all do but don't bother to call them after 1500 hrs as they will all have gone home by then.

Hmm, don't think I would want to be hugely unpopular for a living, but a 3pm early dart certainly appeals.

In the 80's and 90's, when I worked in the art studio for a large printing company, I used to look out of the window and see builders, landscape gardeners, painters working outside in the sunshine, and I'd think "lucky bastards, here's me stuck indoors".

These days, when I'm on a scaffold with the rain coming at me sideways, I look in through the window at people sat at desks with shirt sleeves rolled up, and think "lucky bastards".

But I suppose you take the rough with the smooth, no one loves their work all the time. Even porn actors will have times when they're a bit "down"
