    I suppose it's inevitable that many of the words that irritate us so much will become accepted as being 'correct'.

    If we could go back 500 years and have a conversation with someone, using 'correct modern English', they would think we were either pissed or simpletons.

    Learnt is simply the past tense of the verb "learn". Learned is an alternative form of the verb but also an adjective as in "learned teacher" (pronounced differently from the verb form).

    About fifteen years ago, it was fashionable to say "thanks for that", when a simple "thanks" would have been sufficient.

    Grossly irritating for me, is the currently fashionable expression of 'Oh my days', uttered by the illiterate as an exclamation of astonishment or gleeful disapproval. Apparently, within some circles (i'd suggest those populated by imbeciles), it's considered as 'cool'....
