    I wouldn't say 'trousers' irritates me (unless they have a high wool content, but then it's more of an itch) but there's something about it that makes me slightly queasy. I imagine the French have the same problem with les pantalons - worse probably. Seems to invite a joke, faintly ludicrous. And is it singular or plural, is there a trouser ? Is a pair of trousers actually two pairs of trousers ? Very confusing.

    I would assume (quite reasonably), that somebody 'axing' might be chopping down a tree. If not, then they don't speak a language I understand and should be ignored.
