    Default Hello

Lurked here for years and tried to join a couple of times but never seemed to get the registration emails ....... until now!

Tried for years (decades?!!) to run decent stereo and multichannel surround in the same room and finally realised that’s its simply not worth the hassle and compromises so currently off-loading surround speakers, subs, processors and amps to concentrate on the important part - L and R stereo

Final nail in the coffin was a Marantz 8801 processor being unable to pass through HDR and it dawned on me that this will continue to be an issue every year when the latest and greatest codec is released.

    Nope.
    Not having it.

    Anyway....two channel is currently;

Marantz CD17KI (used once in three years)
Synology NAS feeding FLAC and DSD into Cambridge Audio 851N streamer/DAC/pre.
    Krell KRC-3 pre
EAD PM 8300 power amp - currently using 4 of the 8 300w/ch monoblocks to bi-amp a pair of
    B&W 800D
SVS PC13-U (great for occasional dubstep )

The Krell and EAD will be going soon - I’m liking the idea of a monster integrated to simplify the boxes or maybe a stereo power amp and use the pre-out from the 851N which is (to me at least) surprisingly good.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Hi Steve, glad you finally managed to join us.

Serious system you have there, you will need one hell of an integrated amp to fit in there. Lots of the regulars here are from up your way, must be a thing about the North East and hi-fi, not sure what it is though. Maybe the weather?

    Thanks Martin.

Looking at Nuvista 800 or used KW500/550 or even the M6 500i being advertised - a mates original Nuvista sounded pretty good driving big B&Ws and had a good few years myself with a 308 pre/power combo so thinking of giving MF another try. Big price difference between the NV800 and KW so will be doing a little research before going for the more expensive option.

As for music/hi fi up here - It was explained to me over 30 years ago.

    Ah very good.

The Nuvista gear always interested me, the concept of tiny little valves, but I don't think I've ever heard any of it.

Welcome to AOS from me too Steve.

Feel free to join in the fun and chat with everybody, there's lots going on.

If you want opinions on big integrateds, why not start a thread in the Blank Canvas section and outline your ideas.

    Enjoy the forum,
    Geoff.
