    I'm Ian.

    Default Hello from Maidstone Kent!

hi I'm Ian and very glad to be joining this community.

I've always been interested in music and can still recall buying and listening to "love over Gold" for the first time on my brand new Yamaha CDX2 in October 1984!

Music tastes are pretty varied. Classical from opera, choral, quartets and symphonies. Modern "soft rock" as Spotify calls it and even a little country and the Carpenters! I draw the line at the music coming from the kids bedrooms though. - God I sound like my father!

Over those early years things progressed from the Yamaha to a Meridian 206b CD player, with a Mission Cyrus 2 amp, Rotel 850L tuner & Yamaha cassette deck with Spendor LS3/5As replacing the original Kef Codas

Over the next 20 years I didn't get much time for listening and when I did I always felt something was missing, the music was not alive enough. Even adding a Ebay sourced PSX about 4 years ago didn't really do it for me.

Then I saw a Naim SuperUniti on ebay and took the plunge and am hooked once more. It was great to be able to hear DAB and Spotify over the system as well as CDs.

Over the next two years I added a nap 250 & CDX2 (all ebay) and brought a pair of Spendor D7s and chord signature tuned interconnects from my local and very helpful dealer. The speaker cables were also upgraded with chord signature - again sourced from ebay.

Definitely doing a lot more listening now. Still have the old kit – some in the loft, some in France… as they are old friends I couldn’t part with them.

When the nap250 on/off switch failed last December it had to go back to Naim for repair. I decided to have the "DR" upgrade done at the same time - well I reasoned it would be rude not to!

Now looking to upgrade the speaker cables and was very impressed with Coherent Systems 6Ds, they were really nice - but think I ought to look at the 4Ds as well before switching.

    Well that’s me.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Thanks all for the warm welcome, there are certainly a lot of diverse topics to get into and I’m enjoying the various threads.

The discussions on vinyl are encouraging me to bring out my very original techniques SL2 from the shed and dig out the records from under the stairs to hear what I kinda know I’m missing, and even the hi-res digital downloads can’t quite recreate.
