A "hi-fi habit" can be extremely expensive if you read Hi-Fi News and think that's what hi-fi is, but it can be quite a cheap habit too, particularly if you're into DIY hi-fi. For example, you could build a pair of speakers with fairly cheap drivers, learn a lot in the process, spend a lot of happy hours designing and measuring them and evaluating and refining them, and it doesn't have to cost a lot of money. You could even buy a cheap pair of speakers from a charity shop and indulge your DIY creativity with them for peanuts.
Anyway, I'm just saying that hi-fi doesn't have to be about buying Krell amps or Martin Logan speakers every few months.

    Absolutely, Andrew. I completely agree!

However, my point was mainly that if you have sufficient disposable income to 'dick around' with hi-fi equipment (DIY or otherwise), and don't need to worry about having a roof over your head or putting food on the table, then you *should* be happy, as millions of others around the world don't have that luxury.

The problem is, folks these days want way too much, and consequently complicate their lives, sometimes to ridiculous degrees, in order to get it (and/or in the process choose to be with the wrong people), to the point that their lives (and hobbies) are no longer enjoyable...

The solution is often to want for less 'stuff' (material possessions) and simplify your life accordingly, whilst dumping any joy-drainers, dragging you down. And that doesn't just apply to hi-fi enthusiasts!

    Hear, hear (on all counts)!

The bit in bold, however, is what makes AoS different, and not simply a soulless 'hi-fi forum'...

Nah, completely wrong - it's all about accumulating stuff. If you're not happy, you ain't got enough stuff!

    Ha - whatever works, works

Just make sure that it *genuinely* does, and isn't simply wishful thinking!

I was only joking. I actually live quite a simple life. Could do with a bit of de-cluttering though.

Your point about stuff Marco is very relevant to a marked change over the last 50 years in people's material expectations.

This desire for more and more stuff, perpetuated by comparison with others doing the same, was incepted by Edward Bernhays, Freud's nephew, and founder of Public Relations.

In essence he worked on the psychology of persuading people to buy things on the basis of wants rather than needs, and wants can be 'created' with sophisticated seduction.

If we have possessions which are not in current use as a tool for living, or a part of a fulfilling and progressive life, they are IMO irrelevant and a waste of resources and earning power.
