Certainly the driving test is a joke - and always has been... It's nowhere near thorough enough.

Aside from skid control, where is driving in the snow or ice taught (as clearly few have a clue how to do it)? What about some basic mechanics, too? So many drivers don't even know where engine coolant or oil should go - in fact I'd hazard a guess that most have never even popped up their car's bonnet!

They just fill it up with fuel and think that's enough....

Also, most importantly, can someone tell me how it makes sense to exclude motorway driving from the test, banning learners from there, yet expect new drivers who've just passed their test to know what they're doing, when they're unleashed onto one...??

It's a TOTALLY DIFFERENT type of driving, which they'll have had ZERO experience of!!

When I took my bike test 1989, it took all of 15 minutes, emergency stop, I was doing less than 20 mph! It was my lessons that made respect the road and it's other users

Indeed, yet on your lessons there would've been no teaching for motorway driving..... The whole system's piss poor, which is why there are so many idiots on the road, posing as 'drivers'

Pander to "speed kills" , which is rubbish, drivers who can't drive are to blame. The driving test is a farce, you are taught to pass the test not drive. Satnavs being part of the test, another distraction!

Where is the skid control taught, a skid is going to happen at some time.

Depth perception is easily tested, not in the test tho. Following vehicles at 30mph or less, is totally different when outside town limits.

As I live fairly rurally my brain does not always compute with speed limits, I've resorted to technology and set my speed limiter to conform, leaving me free to concentrate on what I should be doing.......concentrating on the other idiots on the road.

People taking the test now have to know where fluids etc go, It’s part of the test now, and I believe motorway driving is being introduced soon.

You’re right about skid training though, that should also be included.

On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio”

My motorcycling time taught me many things about observations of road surface, diesel spliiage, other drivers and of the many lessons I learned there are two that stand out:

When on a road and there is a junction from left or right, I watch the front wheel of the waiting vehicle. Watch for road wheel rotation as that moves quicker than the vehicle itself.

My motorcycling time taught me that every other road user is potentially an unpredictable idiot with homicidal tendencies.

You sure develop strong survival insticts, keen observational skills and fast reactions when riding.
