So the presumption is, if you've got the disposable income necessary to purchase said DAC, you've got more money than sense to spend on an overpriced remote control?

Being able to afford something easily, or otherwise, doesn't automatically rob one of one's common sense and desire to obtain value for money. This remote control nonsense is indicative of how anything used in a high-end hi-fi context attracts a ridiculous premium.

'Professional record cleaners', anyone? A vacuum pump, with a rotating platter in a cheap chipboard box, yours for £500.... And can someone remind me how much Linn charge for a replacement plastic lid for an LP12?

£100 for a stylus pressure gauge, identical to the mass-produced Chinese variety, sold on ebay for a mere fraction of the price, simply because it comes with an 'audiophile badge'?

And there are 100s, if not 1000s of examples of such ridiculously inflated prices, for fairly basic items, simply because they're being applied for hi-fi purposes. Only idiots with more money than sense don't consider that before opening their wallets.

The latter has landed on his feet by happenstance, and lives relatively free of commitments, involvements, or passions, but he doesn't even bother really to cook for himself, and goes out to cafes because he can with little impact on his finances. He has two houses which are in turmoil and need refurbishing, and has bought a third, I feel to avoid the responsibility for the mess the others are in, and he seems to throw money at a problem rather than get involved.

The problem with the latter, as I see it, is that he is sabotaging his quality of life by not getting involved in things, exploring his inner self, and discovering new experiences, which to me will enrich his life, and in his position he could do so well. He also visits a nearby lady who has inherited a lot from her ex husband, a sea Captain, and she wastes it because she does not know its value, and she is exploited with extortionate prices, she not realising it. He points this out to me in conversation.

Where there is excessive wealth, there will I suspect always be those who do not appreciate its value and power, and they are ripe for businesses to exploit, and we see this in the audio sphere because we have some understanding of it; milking the rich has become a strategy for living for some.

Some wealthy folk are very shrewd and you'd be lucky to even wring a penny from them.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

Ah but are they like that because they are rich and want to stay that way, or did they get rich by being like it? When I was a visitor to our, now sadly closed, local car boot sale there was a regular who used to turn up to look round in an immaculate 1978 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. I always wondered if he could afford the car because he shopped at car boot sale, or if he was forced to shop at a car boot sale because he owned the car!

I was under the impression that you could by a decent 1970s Roller for three or four grand? I suppose running costs aren't cheap but if you only take it out on weekends that's not much of an issue.

Not much chance of that these days. Probably more like eight to twenty grand depending on nick and seller.
