Given the slow pace of chess they can switch off and wait for the valves to cool down before making the next move before switching them on again. Your opponent would then be faced with making a move quckly before they warm up again or repeating the process.
Or use tweezers.

I remember seeing a photo of something similar from a show (probably CES). It was in HFN/RR & I think it was a display for Gold Aero valves
The difference is that I'm pretty sure they weren't functioning - the valves were just sitting in cup type things to make them stand up.
