Default Album Club, December 2017: Def Leppard - 'Hysteria'

The Album Club choice for December comes courtey of Dan (dantheman91) with Def Leppard's 'Hysteria'. As always, please listen to the album in its entirety before you comment and/or vote.

    Def Leppard - Hysteria

Well Well Well, this is an all time classic for me going through the later school years listening to the cassette on my Sony Walkman.
Those were the days I still have the cassette anyway this is a great album from south Yorkshire based Def Leppard with some great tracks from Lovebites, Animal, Pour Some Sugar on Me, Hysteria, etc - this album is the turning point of their career because of drummer Rick Allen’s crash they invited him back to play with one arm so marks a point for them also, a fab recording also from phonogram for all you classic rock fans here on AoS give it a go. I have linked WIKI, and a couple of YouTube videos released in 1987 and still stands the test of time today.

My listening choice is Vinyl, a pure 10/10 for me.

    Track listing

All tracks written by Joe Elliott, Rick Savage, Phil Collen, Steve Clark and Mutt Lange.

Dan, you've just done a Barry on me (made me revisit something I've not played in a long time).
    To be honest, when
    Hysteria
first came out I was not taken with it or Def Leppard.
but realised after a while it had grown on me and playing far more than I realised.
Another great choice this month, well done.
Just about to vote a 9. Which is excellent from me BTW.

Certainly not my normal style of music to listen to, however I liked it. Thanks Dan.
Good to hear something a bit different thanks to the Album club. 7/10

I liked this initially, but friends of mine back in the day played it to death and ruined it for me. I saw this as a bit of a progression from trying to be an American AOR band which they tried on their previous album, and didnt really succeed at it.

Being honest I am a High And Dry man, when it comes to this band, that I think was their best album. Saw them live numerous times but the earlier music is what I like most.

This was the album that gave them their big break and was well liked, so to recognise that I gave it a 7 out of 10

Humm , Can't get my head round this album , Its Rock but laid back at a slower rate sort of plods along unlike proper Rock that hits you in the face full on , Also some tracks have backing singers ?

Not my ideal listening so its only a 6 from me sorry

Crikey was that 30 years ago!

1987 was a year of change for me and whilst I was generally listening to heavier stuff like Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth etc at the time the release of Animal captured my attention and I bought it on 7" single.

With limited income at the time and so many things competing for those funds, I didn't buy the album straight away although I had a copy of it on tape that a friend I worked with did for me.

I listened to that tape lots and eventually bought the album on CD and it became a firm favourite.
When the Mrs and I first got together it was one of those albums that we both liked although she had never owned it and despite it being fifteen years old at the time.

We still play it on a fairly regular basis and whilst it is not on weekly it will be played once or more a month most months.

Whilst the album is very much of its time I think that it has aged well, but having known it since release it is difficult to imagine listening to it for the first time in 2017 and not thinking it may sound dated.

I have owned the first three Def Leppard albums - 'On Through the Night' 'High 'n' Dry' & 'Pyromania' but never really got on with them and they were sold some time ago. Equally I've not bothered with anything newer from them.

As it is still a fairly regular listen, I know exactly what I am getting when I put it on, and for me there are no filler tracks.

Just chatting about it now with the good lady as I write this and I know that it isn't perfect, or ground-breaking but for the reasons I have already mentioned it will always be a favourite album that will be played and reminds of of different time.

I've played it a lot over the 30 years since it's release and still enjoy it and sing along.

So it gets a solid 9/10 from me.
    Best Wishes
    Christopher D

I wanted to like this album more at the time, and would still like to. However for me it was always a step too far from being a hungry young rock band with great tunes to becoming prisoners of Professor Mutt Lange's laboratory in which he extracted what he needed from them and disposed of their NWOBHM souls. In fact I see that Wikipedia says that he set the goal of it being a hard rock answer to Thriller, with every track capable of being a single. l think Pyromania got the balance right, with High 'N' Dry a close second. I confess an aversion to a lot of 80's records due to the brightness of the production and I detest the drum sound (even now the opening of the Eastenders theme makes me cringe).

Much respect due to Def Leppard though. It annoys me that in the Made In Sheffield documentary which wheels out Phil Oakey, the whole Heaven 17 / BEF etc crew and Jarvis, that Def Leppard only get a one sentence mention. They've repeatedly come back from tragedy and come across as well-grounded.

Nonetheless there are golden moments on this album and Pour Some Sugar On Me is utterly fabulous.

    A belated 6/10

Def Leppard passed me by (as did a lot of AOR bands of the late '80s), so it was interesting, and enjoyable to listen to this album, albeit one which sounds somewhat formulaic.

I'll gibe it 8/10, largely out of nostalgia.
