    Will now include

    Marantz pm4

Valve amp up to around the 400 mark
    Eg wad mel84

Or could stretch a little further for a jsoundlab 300b.

A bit over your £400 budget but still good value:

    Glasshouse Passive Pre £120 delivered

    WAD KEL80 Monos £350

my j sound labs 300B worked well with quad 63 at Scalford. Many visitors commented that they didn't think 300B would drive 63's and were surprised what they heard. All change here, '80s Sony receiver beats all.

The obvious solution is to buy some Harbeth speakers because all amplifiers apparently sound the same through them...

    Thanks or all the recommendations.

As a complete about face, i have gone for a
    vintage Marantz 2215b receiver.

After a couple of miserable ebay experiences trying to source an amplifier for christmas, hopefully this will be 3rd time lucky.

I'm looking forward to Bing Crosby for Christmas :-)

    Glad you found something Philip.

I shall be trying to avoid any Bing Crosby!
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Well, finally received tne marantz 2215b in tne post.
Apart from a very minor ding to the edge of the faceplate which isn’t particularly noticeable, it could be stright from the factory.

As for the pairing with the ms pageant 2, 40 odd year old gear shouldn’t sound this good so cheaply should it?

First time i have heard the pageants, and they are stupidly cheap on ebay, if you can recap tnem.

    Much better than i expected.

I have been after some snell k for ages, as rhey seem to go in to the stratosphere pricewuse.
They aren’t 10 to 15 tmes better than tne pageans for sure.

All in all, a very enjoyable listen.

Oh....and the marantz has tne same speaker termnals as the pageants.
Saying they ate the work of tne devil was beng kind.
