    Default Ferrograph Series 7

    Hello.

I was arranging taking my new (to me, obvs) Tascam 388 to Service Sound in Bexhill for 'the works' and mentioned to Geoff that I was selling my Studer B62 to get something more in a price range fitting my lowly compositions , like a Revox B77 or PR99, and instead he's offered me the above reel to reel for £500. Obviously it's going to be completely overhauled. It's a quarter track but he's going to put half track heads on. It's 7.5ips, altho he can make it 15 if I want...but the music I make is pretty bass heavy so 7.5 is probably no bad thing. It comes with the built-in amp and speakers.

My question is the price - no quibble about the value of the work that'll be done to the machine by who I understand is one of the best in the bizz. My only concern is its resale value. For one reason or another, I tend to swap equipment relatively regularly. Obviously I'm planning on having it around for a long time but...stuff changes. If I should need or want to sell it, will I get something like the 500 back for it? All google searches show them going for not much cash. What are the general opinions of these machines?

    Thanks.

Sound like top price however if its fully serviced , re caped etc should be good for years , in the long term value for money yes , but you say you swap gear a lot so no , you wont get you ££££ back

Was your Studer being taken in part exchange for the Ferrograph? If it was, I would say £500 is too much.

Hi Ferrograph 7 were good recorders in there day but now do have problems with rubber rot on both pinch rollers and idler wheels ( both can cost £20 upwards ) along with the fact that the heads will need replacing in most cases . I know I have 3 ,2 working and one for spares . In fact there is one for sale on E-bay for £9.99 at this time

Tell me about it. I have a Series 6 machine with perished idler wheels. Have a replacement set, but can't see how to fit them.

It's being completely overhauled so all the rubber will be new. The heads will similarly be in good condition.

No, I just sold the Studer for £1150.
