Having been on a bit of a quick fire valve auditioning mission I quickly decided I wanted to try some Telefunken ECC83 valves in my Jolida phonostage. There's been Mullard, Brimar and co in there and each provide a flavour of their own. I was impressed with the fluidity and imaging when the Mullard was in but felt things were a little too soft. The Brimar were good too but sounded a touch dark in the Jolida.
I then found 1 "the Fisher" valve in a box Alan loaned to me. I did a bit of investigation and discovered that this was actually made by Telefunken, I only had one to play with but a quick listen intrigued me to get a pair.
My mind was boggled at some of the prices of these little glass bottles so ended up searching for a pair of "The fisher" valves. They were in the United.S.America. A very reasonable price so I bought them.
Cue Customs as soon as they entered the UK and I managed to collect them today for an extra premium of £25. Feeling peeved that Postman pat had picked my pocket, I sulked a little. I got home and installed the new valves and let them warm up for an hour.
Well, I'm not sulking anymore!!!!!! They are sensational. Simply stunning. They are so good my wife came in for a sit down and a listen. Harmonic, symphonic! vocals, tight expectant, purposeful bass and silky smooth, delicate but intricately detailed Highs drifting off into the ether. Am I drunk you wonder? Well yes, yes I am, On Euphoria.
If you have valves anywhere in your system, I cannot recommend the Telefunkens/The Fisher. Highly enough. I'll be putting a pair in my Monoblocks asap.
