Dialling in the grinder is quite wasteful.
You don’t drink all of the coffee, but have a taste of the extraction time etc. is roughly correct.
I limit myself to three espressos a day and a couple of milk based coffees when at home.

I tend to drink more at work.

Lol.... Alas, the coffee machine was not a success.

Despite pissing around with it all night, it simply wouldn't pour coffee into cups with any kind of pressure, but rather simply 'dripping' it in, and consequently not forming any kind of crema. It tasted ok, as black coffee (with a slight froth), but espresso it wasn't!

It could be that the unit I've got is faulty, so it's going back today for a refund. I'm not willing to try another. However, the milk frother is fantastic, and for 20 highly recommended. It's quick, very effective and well made for the money, so a no-brainer choice as a budget frother.

The grinder also 'works' perfectly well, in terms successfully grinding beans to a very fine powder (or otherwise), but at this stage I'm unable to ascertain its impact on flavour. I'll do that when I get a proper coffee machine, such as the Rancilio, or perhaps a Miele one Del's been looking at, and grinder. Then I'll compare the cheapo grinder from Lidl against the latter and report back.

As ever, it's a case of nothing ventured, nothing gained!

maybe pressing the coffee too hard in the portafilter. also makes this worse the finer the coffee is ground. I can happen with mine too so you have to learn just how much pressure to use. You shouldnt have this issue with a Rancillo

It could also be that you are “grinding” the beans too fine.
Try it a bit coarser. That is the issue with blad grinder - getting the consistency of the grind.

Points noted, chaps, which I'll bear in mind in future. However, I'm unwilling to mess around with it any more, so the machine's been cleaned, packed up and ready to go back.

Ever thought about an Aeropress Marco?

It won't produce crema, but it does make very good coffee consistently and easily, with minimal clean up afterwards. I only drink black Americano, so it's perfect for that. If you have a frother and prefer milk in your coffee, then it's simple and inexpensive.

    Great for travel too.

Noted, Tim, but I like proper espresso, with a nice creamy, dense crema. Without the latter, for me, it's just black coffee.
