“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

Just listening to Duke Ellington's Blues in Orbit which recorded in 1959. Amazing clarity, range and presence. Why oh why are most modern recordings done so poorly these days! Grrrrr...

Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Spark of Life.

First heard/saw this trio 15 years ago, when they were young musicians with the great Tomasz Stanko at the Barbican, playing their great lyrical album, The Soul of Things. On this 2014 album, they are joined by tenor saxophonist Joakim Milder, and make more beautiful music. Marcin is certainly one of the most melodic jazz pianists out there, and the understanding he has with his fellow trio-members is truly telepathic after two decades of playing together.

On the ECM label, which means it's not on streaming platforms, I believe. But, here's a couple of youtube things, which give a flavour ...

https://youtu.be/arqoqUU8qzM ... excerpts from the album

https://youtu.be/E2V1vwQq9qU .... the tune starting about 10 minutes in (Austin) is from this album

That is magnificent. Do you know which album that track is on? Or perhaps which album of his you most recommend?

Sadly, i dont think that clip is on released. Its just a video of a gig.
Its in my favourites and Ive been listening to it daily for ages now. Love it.

He has been around a long time and Im tempted to say anything. But he is always great.

One of my favourites is an early one called. AHMADS BLUES
