Default Shop Requesting A Membership Card To Issue A Refund?

I have just tried to get a refund on a cheap computer game that wont read even after a pro disc polish.

The assistant demanded that I give all the details to apply for a membership card before I can have a refund. I have never wanted to give that shop my details because I only buy cheap games from them when they are cheaper than the internet prices. I wont mention the shop name but you can imagine the sort of shop. I dont trade anything in with them or buy anything over a tenner with them

I said that I dont know of any consumer law that requests all my personal details for a refund. I also backed down and said I didnt want to fall out with her because I need to shop there again from time to time. I took the game away but will try and sneak in and do a swap when she is not serving. Why do I feel in the wrong when I am legally entitled to a refund?

I actually dont like the place and I dont trust them. I will shop there when the prices suit which isnt very often. We are talking a few quid but surely the principle is that I have a cash receipt so I am entitled to a refund without giving other personal details

I just think shops are getting away with something which isnt lawful. I dont want to give my address or show them full id to get a refund. Am I within my rights please?

I think its more do to with preventing the staff stealing or the druggies with the stolen laptops. I cant see why Ive got to be a member to get three quid back

I really dont want much to do with them other than an occasional cash transaction for discs.

She wasnt listening about consumer rights/ fit for purpose so I was basically told to whistle for it if I didnt apply for a membership card. She just smiled in a FU (I hate my job) kind of way

Well, if you were allowed to buy it without a card of membership then they need to take it back and refund if its not fit for purpose.
Of course they can just tell you no, and you then will need to go to law and thats probably what they think you wont do.

Probably categorised as 'computer software'. The regs are a bit different for such items.
It is impossible for anything digital to sound analogue, because it isn't analogue!

Well if they have been getting away with it for so long, Im not really going to approach trading standards for a few pounds. I should do though They usually polish the disc or do a swap for another disc so I cant fault them there.

However I didnt expect a flat out member or no refund policy. A membership involves backing up my address and showing them ID like a credit card or driving licence. I was not in the mood to do that because I shouldnt have to and I dont want that shop with my address on file.

You have the receipt, so they have to refund you, you don't have to give them any personal details. Get the number for Trading Standards on your phone, if they still refuse call TS whilst standing in the shop. They will probably have all gone home early but just pretend to have a conversation with them, you'll get your refund.

Its a used game. Ive broken no seal and they offer a long guarantee. Thats not the issue. The issue is that I dont want to give my details beyond maybe a quick scribble of a postcode and brief signature.

It wouldnt even be my proper postcode or full signature because my receipt should be the contract and I paid cold hard cash

I dont give personal details out unless its officially important that people know it. It would only be to my detriment that such a shop has my details for junk mail and whatever else they want to do with it

The "polish" may have invalidated any rights.
